THE MODERN CHURCH ROSE before us, its spires reaching towards the heavens. Nicole led the four of us toward the entrance, where groups of people navigated through, all familiar with her and Wesley.

“Nicole, did you park where we everyone sees us?” I asked.

“Duh. How else do you ensure you get full cover?” Nicole retorted with a playful eye-roll.

“Kill everyone?” I joked, though with a hint of seriousness.

Laughter erupted, and Wesley, Rachel, and even Nicole joined in, albeit half-heartedly. We continued up the stairs, where a deacon handed pamphlets to Nicole and Rachel. “It’s wonderful to hear joyous laughter. Discussing today’s sermon?” he inquired.

The others blushed, but the intricate workings of Fey power preoccupied my mind. “No, sir,” I replied. “I used to attend a Baptist church, and my joke about failing a philosophy class that covered Thomas Aquinas caught them off guard.”

The deacon chuckled. “You’ll be just fine, my son. And when you feel lost, lean on this wonderful lady who brought you.”

As we stepped into the church, Rachel whispered to me, “You’re right, your brain is working.”

The service unfolded with reverence, and I noticed the Catholic devotion to not skipping leg day. During the sermon, the priest mentioned me, calling me to stand. It was Father Fuller, from the store.

Nicole pinched me as I stood, creating a light moment with my discomfort. Priest Fuller praised my contributions to the church and announced my upcoming involvement in teaching a camping introduction class.

The service dragged on, and leg day kept going. Stand, kneel, sit, and repeat. They sent around the collection plate, the normal part of churches. I pulled out my wallet, and I had a dozen hundreds from the priests who shot at me. “All I have is big bills,” I whispered.

“Take one.” She grabbed a bill from my wallet, folded it, and dropped it in. She covered her mouth when she passed the plate. “Did I just drop a hundred in the collection plate?”

“Don’t worry, I took it off the priests that tried to kill Rebecca and me.” I whispered. Now I grinned like Rachel to keep from laughing at the ridiculous circumstance we were in. If the church marked those bills, we just slapped the church in the face with brazenness.

The sermon started, and it was about leadership. Nicole pulled a bible from the pew in front of us. She opened it to James 3:1. “My brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers, because we know that we teachers will be judged more strictly.”

Good, that’s what I needed as a killer. Preacher Jon made me the leader to judge me harsher.

Nicole pinched me.

That’s right, empath.

After the service, I was ready to run for my life, but the deacon from the main door and his wife headed the four of us off. This was it. I started looking for fighters and how many people I’d need to put down to get us out and on the road. There were no fighters, and I could get us to the car without murder.
